Periodontitis

When the periodontium becomes diseased.

What is actually periodontitis?

Signs of inflammation such as redness, bleeding and also pain can indicate this. We can find out whether it is just gum inflammation or real periodontitis by making a diagnosis. Periodontitis is a disease of the periodontium, which is accompanied by bone loss. This creates deepened pockets in which the inflammation can develop uncontrollably and lead to further bone loss.

If you notice the above signs in time, we can treat the inflammation and prevent the transition to periodontitis.

Smokers may lack the signs of inflammation. Other signs include tooth loosening and already severely exposed necks of teeth.

Does this mean I need to pay extra attention when these signs of inflammation are present?

It may be that you have an increased risk of developing periodontitis. Finding this out is part of our job. A detailed medical history is a prerequisite here.

There are underlying diseases that are closely related and contribute to a deterioration of their oral health. Likewise, periodontitis can lead to a worsening of other diseases and has certain general medical risks.

Inflammation in the mouth can have consequences for my health?

Yes, because remember that your mouth is the start of your digestion. Research shows links between inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and inflammation in the mouth.

The oral cavity is not only the place where food is crushed and digestion begins, but also the place of first contact with pathogens.

Only a balanced environment is able to react adequately. Inflammation, on the other hand, causes unrest and imbalance. Your immune system can then not function in sufficient form and pathogens can invade the body.

Can periodontitis be cured?

I guess the question is, are you ready to take the right steps?

We can support you on this path. This includes a detailed analysis, treatment of periodontitis, as well as enrollment in a recall program.

Periodontitis can be treated, but it requires strict follow-up and regular prevention. How high your risk of recurrence/reinflammation is can only be assessed on an individual basis.

Diet, underlying diseases, lifestyle, and factors such as smoking are variables that can influence progression.

What is the procedure for periodontitis treatment?

The treatment includes cleaning of the recessed gingival pockets. This is done under local anesthesia. Not only solid deposits form in the pockets, but also inflammatory tissue. The goal is to reduce these pocket depths and the inflammation within them. If this occurs, the gums will reattach to your tooth, the swelling and redness will disappear, and bleeding will no longer occur at all or only sporadically.

The foundation for you has been laid. Thorough oral hygiene at home and a regular recall program can ensure the treatment result in the long term.

The regular checks enable us to detect deviations and treat them in good time.

Why are my teeth more sensitive to cold?

Periodontitis is associated with bone loss and leads to root surfaces being exposed. This in turn can cause hyperemfpathy to cold drinks or cold air. Although this is not dangerous, it may cause you to suffer.

There are ways to alleviate this, which we are happy to discuss.

I'm bothered by the dark triangles and I don't dare smile anymore.

Periodontitis triggers bone resorption, which is accompanied by altered esthetics.

Where there was once bone and gum, there are now dark triangles.

The teeth lose strength and positional changes may occur.

Teeth are something very emotional and the shame associated with them can be stigmatizing.

Aesthetic treatments are part of our range of services and are also part of dentistry. We want you to feel good and laugh again.

Because in addition to function, aesthetics are just as important for a healthy whole.
